Carpet weaving of Azerbaijan can be called one of the main centers of carpet weaving in Iran. This region, along with Khorasan, Kerman, Isfahan, Arak and Kashan, is one of the most famous carpet weaving regions in the country. Historical studies show that Tabriz has a great reputation among all carpet weaving centers in this region and along with Herat during the time of Holako’s successors, it was an important center of carpet trade.
The peak of Azerbaijani carpet production flourished during the Safavid period, as the Safavid kings brought together first-class weavers and craftsmen by setting up first-class carpet weaving workshops in the city, creating unique carpets, some of which now adorn the world’s great museums.
In fact, after the transfer of the Safavid capital from Herat to Tabriz, this city was named the second art school, and after that, with the establishment of countless artists from every class and art, Tabriz was considered as an art center and in the meantime The art of carpet weaving will double with the establishment of famous painters and designers, including Master Reza Behzad and Sultan Mohammad.
Of course, we should not easily ignore the role of merchants, they helped to introduce this art to the world by exporting carpets from Azerbaijan and Hamedan and other regions. Part of the Iranian carpets were exported from Azerbaijan to Europe via Turkey and part from Bandar Abbas to the United States
